Guidelines for Operational Barges
The National Capital Authority (NCA) is responsible for the administration of Lake Burley Griffin (the lake) in Canberra. The lake is a popular venue for water sports, in particular, sailing, rowing, sailboarding and canoeing.
The use of work boats and barges are allowed on lake for the purpose of undertaking maintenance and other works.
If a barge is operated using mechanical, electrical or petrol power, the owner is required to obtain a power boat permit from the NCA. The use of power boats on the lake falls under the provisions of the Lakes Ordinance 1976 (the Commonwealth).
The following requirements apply for the operation of work barges on the lake:
- Evidence of the nature of works requiring the use a barge (Contract letter, letter from the Principal / client or other suitable arrangements).
- Evidence of public liability insurance - $20m Australian dollars is recommended.
- The driver / operator of the barge is required to hold an appropriate Australian licence to operate a barge for the intended work to be undertaken.
- The applicant is required to indemnify the Commonwealth against any claims for damages or expenses arising through the use of the barge on the lake.
- The applicant is required at all times to comply with requirements of the Lakes Ordinance 1976 and any provisions set out on the power boat permit.
- The applicant, the driver / operator and all other persons using the barge are required to obey all directions of any member of the ACT Water Police.
