On 7 November 2002 , Patron of the Old Parliament House Gardens Reconstruction project, Mrs Tamie Fraser AO (wife of the former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser) officially launched the Rose Patronage campaign.

The Australian public was invited to celebrate or commemorate a special person or occasion by becoming a patron of the roses being planted. Schools, community groups, garden clubs, city, local and shire councils, families and individuals from places as diverse as Christmas Island to Cabramurra and Hobart have responded to this opportunity to become a part of the nation's capital.
