Bowen Drive Interim Crossing Installation

The National Capital Authority (NCA) will today begin installing a new crossing point at Bowen Place to allow for the construction of a permanent underpass next year.

Bowen Place is part of the popular pedestrian and cyclist route around Lake Burley Griffin's central basin, as well as a busy commuter peak hour road. When complete, the Bowen Place underpass will allow motorists, pedestrians and cyclists continuous access.

NCA Chief Executive, Mr Gary Rake said the permanent underpass will be constructed next year.

'We have completed the necessary tender documentation, environmental, parliamentary and heritage clearances so work on the underpass can commence early in the new year,' Mr Rake said.

'It is anticipated construction of the underpass will be complete by the end of 2014.'

A number of measures will be put in place to improve safety until the underpass is complete.

'The temporary crossing being installed today will be positioned further up Bowen Drive, away from the bend in the road, to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety,' Mr Rake said.

'This will allow pedestrians and cyclists to assess the speed of oncoming traffic, giving them more time to make their decision about crossing the road. We hope that all users will recognise the improved safety and utilise the new crossing point.'

'The speed limit at Bowen Place will also be reduced to 50km/hour from June 2013,' he said.

The temporary crossing will remain in place during the construction of the underpass to allow continuous access for all users during the works.

The existing crossing point on Bowen Drive will be removed in June 2013.

Background

The Bowen Place underpass will include a 300 metre long path connecting Kings Avenue to the existing path network next to Lake Burley Griffin. Pedestrians and cyclists will pass under the existing road at Bowen Place, allowing continuous access for all users. A wall will also be constructed along one side of the path, with open landscaping on the other.
