Commitment to Community Engagement Print Write e-mail

The Board of the National Capital Authority reaffirms its strong commitment to engage with the community, as part of its decision making. The Board recognises that inclusion and engagement, particularly at the early and formative stages of projects and proposals, are vital to building and maintaining community trust.

The National Capital Authority has approved and released a revised version of its consultation protocol; 'Commitment to Community Engagement'. The revised document was released at the NCA Public Forum in April 2011 for public comment in relation to content of the revision. The NCA received one written submission in response to the revised Commitment to Community Engagement (April 2011). The key issues raised in the submission, and how the NCA considered the issues raised, are outlined in the Consultation Report at the link below.

The NCA subsequently updated the Commitment to Community Engagement (April 2011) to incorporate key issues raised by the community. The Commitment to Community Engagement (August 2011) and can be found at the links below.

The Commitment to Community Engagement (August 2011) provides:

  • flexibility for the NCA to go above and beyond the public consultation processes described in the July 2010 document;
  • the NCA with the ability to nominate stakeholders to consult, depending on the nature of the proposal;
  • the NCA with the ability to assess works approval applications using a risk based approach to determine when and how public consultation is undertaken; and
  • greater consistency across the ACT in terms of consultation requirements on planning matters.

One of the action items identified in the document 'Commitment to Community Engagement' is the register of key stakeholders. If you are interested in various aspects of the National Capital Authority, please register your group's details at the link below, so the NCA can advise you directly about projects and proposals which may be within your area of interest.

Engagement with key stakeholders does not replace public consultation, but offers an efficient mechanism for seeking a broad range of views on a particular topic.

Key stakeholders should be aware that the name of the group and the groups 'area of interest' will be published on the website. Contact details of individuals associated with stakeholders will not be published on the NCA website, but will be used by the NCA in the course of communication with those groups. Contact details of individuals associated with stakeholder groups will also be made available to project proponents for the purposes of consultation and engagement.
