Bird Watching

Approximately 250 bird species live in and around Canberra and there are many good bird watching spots around Lake Burley Griffin. The best places include the Black Mountain Nature Reserve and the Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Reserve, where the Molonglo River enters Lake Burley Griffin.

At Kelly’s Swamp in the wetlands there are hides for bird watching. Double-Barred and Red-Brown Finch, Yellow-Rumped Thornbill, Pacific Black Duck, Eurasian Coot, Grey Teal, Pink-Eared Duck, Australasian Shoveller, and Baillon’s and Spotted Crakes are often seen in the area. In total, 170 bird species have been sighted in the reserve. Kelly’s Swamp and the hides can be accessed from Dairy Flat Road, Fyshwick.
