New Kings Avenue - Parkes Way Intersection
Parkes Way will be lowered under the existing level of Kings Avenue, enabling around 25% of through traffic to move through the intersection unimpeded. On and off ramps will allow movement in all directions. Traffic signals will manage traffic movement at the Kings Avenue bridge level.
The Kings Avenue bridge provides pedestrian access between Russell and the Kings Park - Lake recreation areas. On road bicycle lanes are included, which is consistent with ACT Government policy.
The main elements of the construction include roadworks, bridge construction, rationalisation of engineering services infrastructure and associated landscaping. The new bridge is designed to be built within the inner edge of the existing roundabout.
A Traffic Management Plan will be developed to manage changing traffic conditions throughout the construction phases. As part of standard road construction measures traffic speeds will be reduced to 40km/hr during construction times.
Design
The new intersection design will reinforce the vista between Parliament House and Russell, and better define the eastern side of the Griffin Triangle. Its design will be a landmark and 'gateway' to central Canberra.
