Project Summary for Commonwealth Place Forecourt – Stage 2
12 October 2005

Commonwealth Place Forecourt was completed on 30 September 2005.

Commonwealth Place (completed in 2002), an initiative identified in the Outcomes Report of the Parliamentary Zone Review, was constructed on the Land Axis near the southern edge of Lake Burley Griffin in the Parliamentary Zone.

Commonwealth Place Forecourt was designed by the Authority. It complements Commonwealth Place, provides enhanced public amenity in the area, reinforces the Land Axis and provides a suitable setting for the Lake Burley Griffin Lakeside promenade.

Construction of Commonwealth Place Forecourt Stage 1 commenced in August 2003. Stage 1 was completed in February 2004, transforming the foreshore area into a pedestrian zone, through which vehicles are permitted in a controlled manner. The road to either side of the forecourt was re-configured to calm and control traffic. Stage 1 included landscaping, street furniture and relocation of car parking.

Commonwealth Place Forecourt Stage 2, included the construction of two ferry jetties which extend beyond the existing lake edge. The jetties are located symmetrically either side of a paved curving sunken terrace which steps down to the edge of Lake Burley Griffin.

The two new jetties replace two existing pontoon jetties, located in front of the National Library of Australia and the High Court of Australia.
