Anzac Parade Roundabout

The intersection of Anzac Parade with Limestone Avenue and Fairbairn Avenue is on the Land Axis of the Central National Area, in the immediate foreground of the Australian War Memorial. The intersection is located on National Land administered by the Authority. The intersection has been identified as the second most serious 'black spot' in Canberra.

In August 2002 the Authority commissioned Maunsell Pty Ltd to prepare construction documentation for a roundabout at the intersection. The roundabout design is anticipated to result in an 80 per cent reduction in right-turn-into-opposite accidents and a 70 per cent reduction in right-angle accidents. The design of the roundabout further improves the amenity of the Australian War Memorial with the creation of an enlarged forecourt area.

Manteena Pty Ltd started constructing the roundabout on 12 November 2002. Work was completed on 17 April 2003 in time for ANZAC Day commemorations. The contract value, including all fees and the installation of pedestrian operated traffic signal, was $1 615 329.

Federal Government Black Spot Program funding was sought by the Australian Capital Territory Government with the $330 000 received used for the installation of pedestrian operated traffic signals and crossings, at Limestone and Fairbairn Avenues. The pedestrian signals provide safe access between the Australian War Memorial and the Memorials on Anzac Parade.
